TwinCB is looking for a car, and the first thing she links me is a 2015 Versa hatchback. Which, objectively, fine for her, because she doesn’t care in the slightest about cars (although she doesn’t want a Ford or VW [she’s the smart one]), and just needs something to get her from A to B . I gave her a list of models to look out for, a link to a review for the Versa, and some advice on car shopping, and that’s it. Because as much as I know that I could just spam her with Kijiji and Autotrader links, she knows what she wants more than me, and you know what? There’s nothing wrong with that.

Because there is no good reason to buy a compact Nissan over a compact Toyota or Honda.

Both were models I mentioned, but once again, it’s her choice at the end of the day.

W ait ... this sounds like reasons to like us?
I’d tell her to get a Prius because that’s what I tell everyone.

You can only help people when they ask for it.
And on the other end, you have to resist saying “I told you so” if they didn’t take your advice.

The Versa Note hatchback is a better car than the Versa sedan. I test drove a used one before I bought my Fiat. It was actually pretty good, but I passed on it because it had been in an accident and wasn't properly repaired.

That sentence was six words longer than it needed to be.

I get paid by the word.

If she plans on keeping it for the long term, send her how much a CVT replacement cost.
I get it though, helping others car shop, even those close to us can be a fruitless effort.

One of these two?

Seems adequate. I like the previous gen Versa more than this one also the Versa Note feels like driving a tiny minivan.

What is she, American? Remind her that you guys get the Micra up there, which is 1000x more awesome.
And
the Micra is $9999 brand new. Yup, under 10k in Canadian dollars! Down here, the cheapest car is 13k US!

I mean, the only reason that will matter end of the day is “do I want this?” It’s the same
reason I drive 23 year old shitboxes when I could reasonably afford a ten year old non-shitbox. I like what I like, same as she likes what she likes, enthusiast beating disregarded.

until you see how low cars can sell for with dealer incentives and negotiating here in the US

I would definitely have recommended some decent alternatives. There are few cars that I would actively steer a non-car person away from, but this is one of them.
You are a bigger adult than me :)

This is the type of reasoning I use for my 2009 Accent. Everybody asks me ‘why...’, but I like my basic, no-frills car with no options thank you very much. I even like the styling of it, and I am happy with the plasticky interior. :)

No Honda/Toyota tax seems a great reason.

You have to resist?
Since when?

Well I guess you don’t have too. If you piss them off, maybe they won’t come to you for advice again. That’s a win in its own way.

I got into an argument with a friend because I was frustrated with something on my Jetta. She asked why I didn’t just buy a normal car. I said “I like these! They’re cheap and easy to work on!” and she just did not get it. Oh well. More Mk3 for me I guess.

The hatch is probably the same , but the sedan is ideal basic transportation: big backseat, big trunk, good fuel economy, and a touchscreen with a backup camera and Bluetooth audio. Subprime or not, you can get fantastic deals on them new and used.
“Enthusiasts” online might mock her for it, but the Versa is a great choice for reliable, cheap, and new transportation. “The Fit...” There’s a huge difference in used pricing between a used Fit LX and a used Versa Note SV. The $3,000 she could save could go towards rent, buying a house, her future kids, etc.
